The Royal Madras Yacht Club was founded by Sir Francis Spring, the first Chairman of the Madras Port Trust in 1911.

The club was accorded ‘Royal’ status by a warrant from the Sovereign of the United Kingdom.

The highly decorated Field Marshall SMFJ Manekshaw laid the foundation stone for the present Club House in Jan 1981

During the World War I in 1914, shrapnel from the bombs dropped by the German Warship EMDEN damaged the Club.
